Beyond these Blades of Grass – Oak Creek High School Percussion Ensemble took on this new work and played it very musically in this linked recording.  This was written for a wide range of reading abilities and has students playing on either side of mallet instruments to increase the number of players able to use each instrument.  A new approach that can get many new readers on fewer instruments!

Enter Stella’s World – Oak Creek High School Percussion Ensemble rocks this new quirky work! With sections labeled as Wacky Circus Jam and Creepy Jazz Waltz – you are in for a small adventure of music! Essentially, you will be entering… *Stella’s World. Please Enjoy!

Enter Stella’s World is inspired by the tradition of writing works for students that I work with, taking jokes that pop up while we are rehearsing and letting that inspire music!

The Adventures of Megan Dutmeyer is a new multi movement work that encompasses my love for video game-like themes and percussion ensemble music.  With catchy melodies and fun filled grooves and harmonies – this work is going to hit well with many young players who might like 8-bit video game styled themes 🙂

Spaced In for percussion sextet was commissioned by Ryan Brumbaugh and the Adna Pirate Percussion Ensemble in Chehalis, WA.  This is a great piece for intermediate/advanced high school students with blues licks, cool Latin rhythms, and thematic manipulation!

The title and themes of Spaced In are inspired by the way music can make us so focused, while at the same time it is easy to “zone out” to the music.  So we are not “spaced out,” but rather; “spaced in!”

The Questo Collection: Mvt. 1 & 2 is a percussion quintet with straight forward rock and latin grooves and memorable melodies, while having a heavy hint at classical and experimental music with a middle movement driven by rubato and aleatoric writing techniques. Commissioned by The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Mostly Percussion Ensemble, this work is great for a collegiate group of players, while the piece has also been performed by high school groups.

Wind Bowing

Sit back, close your eyes, open your mind, and see what you think of splashing water and bowed vibraphones/marimbas.

This work was premiered by the 2007 University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point Mostly Percussion Ensemble.  Performances directed by Ben Petree.  Commissioned through Robert Rosen.

This is a piece that pushes boundaries, using water with percussion in interesting ways not to mention the subtle sound of the random human voice.  This was inspired by the wind actually bowing the string of a ukelele… it was amazing enough to make me write a piece dedicated to my friends Steve Radke and Robin Lee!

Happy Ending

“Wind Bowing” is a piece for percussion ensemble influenced by an experience with wind and nature itself when two friends and I took a walk around George W. Mead State Wildlife Area in Central Wisconsin.  As musicians and artists, we chose to bring some instruments out into this organic setting, experiencing the simplest acoustic opportunity as much as we could. One instrument, the ukulele, was creating some beautiful noises and timbres with the help of the wind. This wind was naturally bowing the strings of the ukulele, exciting them in the purest sense. This was a wonderful experience and I hope “Wind Bowing” can represent it meaningfully.
